In a press release shared with BTCManager on May 30, 2019, Audius, a decentralized and open source music sharing service currently in its beta, revealed that it will be launching Hedgehog.

The product is a client-side Ethereum wallet that can be used to interact with dApps without confirming transactions, using extensions, or centralizing private keys.

Hedgehog the dApp Game Changer

Per the press release, Audius, an opensource music sharing service has unveiled Hedgehog on May 30, 2019.

Hedgehog is an open-source, client-side Ethereum wallet that can be used to interact with cryptocurrency apps and it does not require extensions or central control of private keys.

Its purpose is to improve the user experience for low-value use cases. As such, users do not need to confirm transactions before they are processed because only a username and password is required to interact with relevant dApps.

According to Audius, MetaMask makes the most sense when dealing with huge sums of money, but like other consumer Web3 providers, it treats every transaction as if the user is spending their entire life savings. This prevents speedy, small-value exchange.

Before a new user can use a crypto app, they will need to install the MetaMask extension, copy and store the wallet’s seed phrase, proceed to set up an account on Coinbase, and then carry out the mandatory KYC procedure on the exchange.

Next, they will have to buy ether (ETH) and then transfer it into their MetaMask wallet. There’s also the additional step of signing up on the dApp they intend to use.

In the same vein, another difficulty is posed when a user wants to move the dApp to another device which means they have to re-install MetaMask on the new device and re-enter the wallet seed.

These cumbersome steps have increased the abandon rate of some dApps by 90 percent, where they give up entirely at the “Install MetaMask” step. The use of Hedgehog, on the other hand, takes away the need to use re-install MetaMask since gas is paid on behalf of the user.

Nevertheless, Audius has advised developers to continue to implement third-party Web3 providers in their dApps to make it easier for users to sign their transactions conveniently if the need arises.

According to the opensource platform, the creation of Hedgehog is not to take away the user’s ability to interact with Web3 products, but to provide them with an “alternative choice for those focused on user experience and adoption.”

Audius further adds that Hedgehog is not suitable for high-value use cases and is not recommended to those who are not comfortable with their transactions not being confirmed before they are processed.
