Blockchain has found a tremendous use case in supply chain management. A Forbes post published May 15, 2019, revealed that Bumble Bee Foods plans to use blockchain for seafood tracking. Also, a press release on PR Web explained how Avery Dennison and EVRYTHNG’s partnership with 1017 ALYX 9SM will allow consumers to authenticate clothing items.
Rising Demand for Brand Transparency
Consumers today are becoming more concerned about what they are buying. To keep up with this expectation and assure them of the quality of products that they are purchasing, brands all over the world are trying different ways to build trust. Speaking of which, no better alternative comes to mind other than using blockchain for tracking products’ journey from the very beginning until the time its in the hands of the consumers.
From Walmart to Starbucks, a number of major brands have started experimenting with blockchain. A week ago, Starbucks announced using Azure blockchain for its bean-to-cup initiative to track coffee beans. Now, two major companies have come up with the ‘ocean-to-table’ and ‘track-to-the-rack’ programs for making their supply chain more effective.
Tracking Fish from Ocean to Table
The century-old seafood company Bumble Bee Foods has partnered with SAP and utilize blockchain to track fish right from the point of catch, to when they’re being bought by customers. Starting later this year, fish packets from Bumble Bee would come with blockchain-derived QR codes which the consumers would be able to scan and see all the details related to the packed fish.
There will be no chances of altering any data as all the entered details will be cryptographically secured. This will ensure that consumers are not being cheated when buying Bumble Bee products. On the other hand, with this initiative the company also looks forward to boosting its standards for fair-trade products, meaning that they will track that every worker involved in the production is fairly paid.
Clothing Born Digitally
Rising to the same demands for transparency, Avery Dennison and EVRYTHNG announced their partnership with 1017 ALYX 9SM, a clothing brand of the famous designer Mathew Williams, this in order to bring blockchain tracking to the clothing industry. They plan to use a proof of concept distributed ledger technology solution powered by IOTA “to create clothing that is born digital.”
Dubbed as ‘track to the rack’, their initiative would provide consumers with transparency and provenance for ALYX’s apparel. They will be able to see a garment’s journey from the time of creation to sale just by scanning the QR code attached to it, thus being able to authenticate products before buying.
Williams, who is also a Nike collaborator, cited:
“By supplying product information, supply chain traceability and transparent dialogue with the consumer, the brand’s authenticity is globally secured.”
