A survey by Pew Research Center conducted from January 8, 2019, to February 7, 2019, posits that despite the spike in controversies over data privacy, fake news, and censorship on social media, the number of U.S. adults who engage in social media websites has remained relatively stable since early 2018. This according to April 10, 2019, report by Pew Research Center.
Instagram Overtakes Other Platforms
Ever since the dawn of the social media era, issues pertaining to privacy and unauthorized access to personal data have taken the center stage.
Social media behemoths like Facebook and Google have often been accused of gathering and leaking users’ confidential data. However, it would seem that despite the rise in concerns over unauthorized data breach, social media websites continue to remain popular among users.
According to a survey by Pew Research Center, the number of adults who stated that they use Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter, has remained largely unbudged compared to the figures in 2016. Only Instagram was found to have recorded a substantial increase in use during this time period.
Per the survey, Mark Zuckerberg led Facebook continues to dominate the internet with approximately seven out of ten adults in the U.S. reporting that they use the blue and white social media platform. Interestingly, per another 2018 Center survey, it came to light that the number of U.S. teens using Facebook has dropped in recent years. The popularity of Facebook was eclipsed by other platforms such as YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram, among teenagers.
High Popularity of Instagram and Snapchat among Young Populace
Another interesting result drawn from the survey is regarding the subtle relationship between an individual’s age and their preferred social media platform.
It was found that 73 percent of people aged 18 to 24 reported using Snapchat compared to 47 percent of those aged 25 to 29. Similarly, 75 percent of people aged 18 to 24 stated that they use Instagram vis-à-vis 57 percent of those aged 25 to 29.
It’s worth highlighting that the survey found that such age-related differences were considerably less pronounced for Facebook. The use of Facebook among people was found to be more linear and uniform with 68 percent of those aged 50 to 64 reporting that they use the popular social media platform. The proportion of people using Facebook aged 65 and above was found to be almost 50 percent.
